Some of my artworks are made purely from memory. This painting began as a straightforward landscape, painted on site, but when it was finished it reminded me of a very memorable afternoon in 2002 when I flew over County Down. I was on a return flight from Alicante to Belfast. Approaching Belfast International, the pilot informed us that if we looked out the right side of the plane, we would glimpse the beautiful Silent Valley reservoir in the heart of the Mourne Mountains.

I won’t forget what I saw that day and the privilege of seeing such a stunning landscape from the air.
This is one of my largest watercolours and was a challenge to paint, but I feel it captured the scale and mood of the scene that day in 2002. I’d love to hear what you think…
